How GutWise is funded
Stated in full, because a health recommendation you cannot audit is worth very little.
Last updated
The short version
GutWise currently earns no money. There are no affiliate links anywhere on this site, no sponsored posts, no paid placements and no display advertising. Nothing you click earns us a commission, and no brand has paid to appear.
That is not a boast, it is just the current state of things, and it is worth knowing when you read a page that recommends products.
What that means for the product pages
Our product recommendations link directly to the maker or to an ordinary retailer. We receive nothing either way, which means the ordering reflects what we think is actually useful and nothing else.
It also means we have no reason to pad the list. Most of what you need during the elimination phase is ordinary supermarket food — rice, potatoes, carrots, eggs, oats, lactose-free milk — and several entries on that page exist specifically to tell you not to spend extra. A page funded by commission has a quiet incentive not to say that.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your email address or any other data. See our privacy policy.
- We do not accept payment for a placement, a ranking or a review.
- We do not publish sponsored content dressed up as editorial.
- We do not accept free products in exchange for coverage.
If this changes
Content sites are usually funded by affiliate commission or advertising eventually, and it is possible GutWise will be too. If that happens, three things will happen with it:
- This page will be rewritten to name every programme we join, before any paid link goes live.
- Every page carrying a paid link will disclose it above the fold andbefore the first link — the US Federal Trade Commission's standard is that a disclosure be clear and conspicuous, and a note buried in a footer does not meet it.
- Paid links will be machine-identifiable with
rel="nofollow sponsored", so the commercial relationship is legible to software as well as to you.
What will not change is the ordering rule: commission would never determine what we recommend or in what order. The clearest test of that is the product we recommend most often — the Monash University FODMAP app — which has no affiliate programme at all and would still be first.
The email list
The one thing we ask for is your email address, in exchange for the Starter Kit. That list is not rented, sold or shared, and every message carries a one-click unsubscribe. It exists so we can tell people when there is something new worth reading, and for no other purpose.
