Are Ricotta and cottage cheese Low FODMAP?

Portion-dependent

Low FODMAP only up to the serving size listed — larger servings stack.

Safe serving

40 g, about 2 tablespoons

FODMAP group responsible

  • Lactose — Disaccharides. Milk sugar. Reduced or absent in aged cheese and lactose-free dairy.

Why

The soft fresh cheeses keep their lactose, unlike aged hard cheeses where it is consumed during maturation. Low FODMAP at a couple of tablespoons, which is a garnish rather than the filling in a lasagne.

What to use instead

  • Lactose-free cream cheese or feta

Both sit comfortably at 40 g and give a similar texture.

This entry is compiled from published Monash-aligned guidance rather than our own laboratory testing, and thresholds are revised as new data arrives. For the elimination phase the Monash app is the authority. See the full food list for how the categories fit together, orcheck another food.
